Interaction to Next Paint (INP)
How quickly a page visibly responds after someone clicks, taps, or types.
What it means
Interaction to Next Paint measures the delay between someone interacting with your page — clicking a button, tapping a menu, typing in a form — and the page visibly responding. It replaced First Input Delay (FID) as an official Core Web Vital on March 12, 2024, after being introduced as an experimental metric in May 2022, because it measures responsiveness across a whole visit rather than just the first interaction.
Why it matters
A page that looks fast to load but feels sluggish to actually use is a common and frustrating experience — buttons that don't respond, menus that lag. A "good" INP is 200 milliseconds or less at the 75th percentile of visits, and it's now part of what Google considers when ranking pages.
