How to Set Up IndexNow (API Key + Submission)

Setting up IndexNow takes a one-time key generation step, then submitting URLs as you publish or update pages. If your site runs on WordPress, a plugin can handle the key step automatically.

1. Generate an IndexNow API key — a long random text string. Most IndexNow-compatible WordPress plugins (like the built-in support in some SEO plugins) generate and host this for you automatically.
2. Host the key file at your site's root, so it's reachable at a URL like yoursite.com/<your-key>.txt — again, a WordPress plugin usually does this step for you.
3. Submit your page URLs to IndexNow via a single API request — you can submit up to 10,000 URLs in one request, mixing http and https as needed.
4. Verify the submission was accepted in Bing Webmaster Tools, under the IndexNow section.
5. Repeat submission whenever you publish or significantly update a page — this isn't a one-time setup, it's an ongoing habit.

Do I need to do the key and hosting setup myself?

If your site supports it through a plugin, that part is usually automatic. Ask datanephew to check whether IndexNow is already active on your site before you set anything up manually.
