Set up UTM tracking

Build tagged links so a campaign shows up clearly in your reports.

Setting up UTM tracking before you launch a campaign means you can ask specific questions about it afterward instead of guessing from vague referral traffic.

Steps

  1. Decide the campaign name, source, and medium you want the link tagged with — for example source=newsletter, medium=email, campaign=fall-sale.
  2. Ask Claude to build the tagged URL for you, or use Google's Campaign URL Builder with those same values.
  3. Use the tagged link everywhere that campaign appears — email, social post, ad — swapping only the source or medium as needed.
  4. After the campaign runs, ask Claude how that campaign performed by name.
  5. Keep a consistent naming pattern across campaigns so future comparisons stay clean.

What happens if I forget to tag a link?

That traffic usually falls into a broader 'referral' or 'direct' bucket instead of showing up under the campaign — ask datanephew to check if any recent traffic looks like it might be untagged campaign traffic.

Can datanephew check my tagging is consistent?

Ask it to list the source/medium/campaign combinations it is seeing in your Analytics data — that is a fast way to catch a typo or an inconsistent naming pattern.
