What Is Average Position?
An impression-weighted average of where your page ranked, which can be misread as a single fixed rank.
What it means
Average position is the mean ranking spot your page held across every impression it earned for a query, weighted by how many impressions happened at each position. If your page ranked #2 for most searches but occasionally showed up at #20 in a different context, your average position will land somewhere in between, not neatly at #2.
Why it matters
Business owners often read "average position 4.2" as "I rank #4," but a single average can hide a lot of variation — the same page might rank #1 for a branded search and #15 for a competitive one, both folded into the same number. A big shift in average position is worth investigating at the query level rather than trusting the headline number alone.

My average position is 5 — does that mean I rank #5?
Ask datanephew to break your average position down by individual query — the average can combine very different rankings into one number that doesn't describe any single search accurately.
My average position got worse — what happened?
Ask datanephew to check which specific queries dropped the most — a shift in the overall average is often driven by just a handful of keywords, not a sitewide decline.
