How to Add a Meta Description in WordPress (Yoast/Rank Math)

Write the short summary that shows up under your page's title in Google search results.

A meta description is the short snippet of text that often appears under your page's title in search results. It doesn't directly boost rankings, but a good one is often the difference between someone clicking your result or a competitor's.

Steps

  1. Install and activate an SEO plugin if you haven't already — Yoast SEO and Rank Math are the two most common.
  2. Open the post or page you want to edit and scroll down to the plugin's SEO panel below the content editor.
  3. Find the "Meta description" or "SEO description" field.
  4. Write one or two sentences summarizing the page and, where it fits naturally, include the main phrase someone might search for.
  5. Keep it under about 155-160 characters so it doesn't get cut off in search results.
  6. Update the post to save.

What if I have hundreds of old posts with no meta description?

Ask datanephew to find which of your pages are missing one, starting with your highest-traffic pages — that's a much better use of time than rewriting all of them at once.

Does a better meta description improve my ranking?

Not directly — Google doesn't use it as a ranking factor. But a compelling one improves your click-through rate, and pages that get clicked more can indirectly perform better over time.
