Click-to-Call (Tap-to-Call) Links
A phone number on your website that starts a call when someone taps it on a phone.
What it means
A click-to-call link turns the phone number on your website into something a visitor can tap to dial, instead of copying the number by hand. Under the hood it's an ordinary link that starts with tel: followed by your number. Most website builders make one when you add a phone button or a "Call us" link.
A number typed as plain text may or may not be tappable, depending on the phone and the browser. A real tel: link always is.
Why it matters
For a local business, a phone call is often the whole point of the visit, and most local searches happen on phones. Every extra step between "I need a plumber" and the call loses some customers, so a tappable number near the top of the page is one of the simplest fixes a site can have.
The number should also be the same one your Business Profile shows. A different number on your site and your listing confuses customers and the search engines that compare them.
ask datanephew
Can datanephew tell me how many people tap to call from my website?
Only if your site records those taps. Google Analytics doesn't count them on its own: you need an event for clicks on tel: links, usually set up through Google Tag Manager. Once that event exists, datanephew reads it with the rest of your Google Analytics data. Calls from the call button on your Business Profile are counted separately, and datanephew reads those from your Business Profile performance for free.
Should I use a tracking phone number?
It's a common way to see which ad or listing a call came from. If you use one on your website, keep your main number on your Business Profile, so your listing's details stay the same across the web.
