What Is ThruPlay?
A video metric counting views that reached 15 seconds, or completed if shorter than that.
What it means
ThruPlay counts a video view once someone watches at least 15 seconds of it, or watches the whole thing if it's shorter than 15 seconds. It originated as an optimization and billing metric for video ads — advertisers could tell Facebook to optimize delivery for, and pay for, views that actually held attention rather than just started playing.
Why it matters
Because ThruPlay was built for ads, it's a more meaningful signal of real interest than a raw play count, but it's not something you'll see reported the same way on an ordinary organic post. If you're comparing video performance across a campaign, make sure you know whether you're looking at ThruPlay or a plain view count — they answer different questions.
ask datanephew
Does my organic video content get a ThruPlay number?
datanephew reads your Facebook Page metrics, which is a different data set from ad delivery reporting — ask it what view metrics are actually available for a specific video and it will tell you what's there rather than assume ThruPlay applies.
Is a high view count on my video actually a good sign?
Ask datanephew to look at how those views break down — a lot of very short views tells a different story than a lot of long ones, even without a formal ThruPlay number attached.
