Lists vs. Segments
A list is everyone you can email; a segment is a smaller slice of that list picked out by some rule.
What it means
A list holds all your subscribers. A segment is a filtered view of a list — people who opened your last three emails, or who bought something in the last month, for example — built from a rule rather than typed in by hand.
Why it matters
Sending everything to your entire list treats a brand-new subscriber the same as someone who bought from you five times, which usually means both groups get a message that fits neither of them well. Segments let you send something more relevant to each group, and relevance is one of the biggest levers on open and click rates.
ask datanephew
Which segment of my list engages the most?
Ask datanephew to break down open and click rates by segment for a recent campaign — it can show you which slice of your list is actually paying attention.
Am I sending too many generic, one-size-fits-all campaigns?
Ask datanephew to compare engagement on your segmented sends versus your full-list sends — a real gap between the two is a sign segmenting more often would pay off.
