Average Engagement Time
How long, on average, your site was actually in focus in front of a visitor during a session.
What it means
Average engagement time measures how long your site was actively in the foreground of a visitor's screen — not how long the browser tab was merely open. If someone opens your page and switches to another tab for ten minutes, that idle time doesn't count toward engagement time.
Why it matters
This is a more honest read on attention than old "time on page" metrics, which counted idle background tabs the same as active reading. A low average engagement time on a page that should hold attention (like a long article) can be a real signal that content isn't landing, rather than a tracking artifact.
ask datanephew
Are people actually reading my pages, or just opening and leaving?
Ask datanephew for average engagement time by page — a low number on a page meant to hold attention is worth investigating.
Which of my pages hold attention the longest?
Ask datanephew to rank your pages by average engagement time so you can see what's working and maybe apply it elsewhere.
