Engagement Rate in GA4

The share of your sessions that GA4 counts as engaged rather than a quick drop-off.

What it means

Engagement rate is engaged sessions divided by total sessions, shown as a percentage. If 60 out of 100 visits met GA4's engaged-session bar (lasted 10+ seconds, hit a key event, or covered two-plus pages), your engagement rate is 60%.

Why it matters

This number replaced bounce rate as GA4's headline quality metric, and it's framed the opposite way — higher is better here, where higher bounce rate used to mean worse. Comparing it directly to an old Universal Analytics bounce rate will give you a misleading read, since they measure different things.

ask datanephew

What's my current engagement rate, and is that good?

Ask datanephew to pull your engagement rate for a date range and compare it against your own historical trend — that's a more useful benchmark than an industry average.

Which pages have the lowest engagement rate?

Ask datanephew to break engagement rate down by landing page — it can flag the ones dragging the average down so you know where to look first.
