What Is an Engaged Session in GA4?

A visit Google Analytics counts as "real" because it lasted a while, hit a goal, or covered multiple pages.

What it means

Google defines an engaged session as one that lasts longer than 10 seconds, includes a key event (like a form submission or purchase), or covers at least two pageviews. Anything short of that — someone glancing at a page and leaving in five seconds — doesn't count as engaged, even though it still counts as a session.

Why it matters

That 10-second threshold is adjustable per data stream (up to 60 seconds) in GA4's admin settings, so two businesses can define "engaged" differently and end up with numbers that aren't directly comparable. If your engagement numbers look unusually good or bad compared to what you'd expect, it's worth checking whether that setting was ever changed.

How many of my visits are actually engaged, not just quick bounces?

Ask datanephew for your engaged sessions and engagement rate over any date range — it reads this straight from your connected GA4 property.

Is my engaged-session threshold set to the default?

Ask datanephew to check your GA4 configuration for the engagement time setting — it's worth confirming if your numbers seem off compared to similar businesses.
