How to Read the GA4 Acquisition Report
Walk through what the Acquisition report actually tells you about where your traffic and customers come from.
The Acquisition report is where GA4 shows you which channels bring people to your site and, further down the funnel, which ones actually lead to key events. It's one of the most useful reports for a small business, but the layout — split between "user acquisition" and "traffic acquisition" views — trips people up.
Steps
- Open the Acquisition report and note whether you're looking at User acquisition (first-touch) or Traffic acquisition (session-based) — they answer different questions.
- Scan the channel grouping column for your top sources: Organic Search, Direct, Paid Social, Referral, and so on.
- Look at sessions or users per channel to see volume.
- Check engagement rate and key events per channel to see which ones bring visitors who actually do something, not just show up.
- Compare this period against a previous one to spot channels that are growing or shrinking.
ask datanephew
Which channel is actually worth my time and money?
Ask datanephew to compare your channels by both volume and key events, not just traffic — a channel that brings fewer visitors but more results is often the better one.
My traffic went up but sales didn't — what happened?
Ask datanephew to break the increase down by channel and engagement — a bump in low-quality traffic can raise the total without moving anything that matters.
