GBP Primary vs. Secondary Categories
The label that tells Google what kind of business you are — and one of the biggest ranking levers you control.
What it means
Your Google Business Profile has one primary category and can have several secondary ones, chosen from a list of more than 4,000 options — "Italian Restaurant" versus just "Restaurant," for example. The primary category is the main signal Google uses to decide which searches your business should appear for.
Why it matters
Picking a category that's too broad or slightly wrong can quietly keep you out of searches you should be winning, even if everything else on your profile is perfect — and it's one of the easiest things to get wrong since the list is so large.
ask datanephew
Can datanephew tell me if my category is hurting my visibility?
Not directly today, since Business Profile data isn't connected yet. Once that support ships, datanephew will be able to look at your category alongside your search performance and flag a mismatch.
How do I pick the right primary category now?
Choose the most specific option that matches what you primarily do — Google's own guidance is to favor precision over breadth, and to add secondary categories for other services you offer.
