Duplicate Google Business Listings

Two or more Google Maps listings for the same business at the same place, which split reviews and confuse customers.

What it means

A duplicate listing is a second Google Maps entry for a business that already has one. They usually appear without the owner doing anything: Google creates a listing from a directory or a customer's suggestion, a previous owner or marketing agency set one up years ago, or a move left the old address behind as its own place.

Google's rules allow one profile per business per location. Separate listings are allowed for genuinely separate things, such as distinct departments with their own entrance, or individual practitioners like doctors and lawyers.

Why it matters

A duplicate splits what should be one listing's strength. Reviews, photos and calls go to whichever version a customer happens to find, and the one you manage may not be the one Google shows. A duplicate with an old phone number or address sends customers somewhere you no longer are.

If you own two profiles for the same place, Google treats that as breaking its guidelines and can suspend them.

ask datanephew

Can datanephew find duplicate listings for my business?

A Maps rank check (Premium Research) returns the businesses showing up for a search at each spot you choose, so a second listing under your name shows up there if it's ranking. datanephew can't remove or merge listings. That goes through Google.

How do I get rid of one?

If it's a listing you don't manage, open it in Google Maps, choose "Suggest an edit", then "Close or remove", and mark it as a duplicate. If you manage both, contact Business Profile support and ask them to remove the duplicate. Reviews on the duplicate are usually lost when it goes, so ask support whether they can be moved before you remove it.
